AMDA Rohingya Relief Successfully Completed

Publication date:2019-02-07

After a year-long humanitarian assistance in Kutupalong Refugee Camp in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, AMDA Rohingya Relief came to a successful completion in October 2018. The project ended fruitfully with a number of positive outcomes that made a mark on the wellbeing of the refugees. In this article, the key figures who headed the initiative, Professor Dr. Sardar A. Nayeem (President, AMDA Bangladesh) and Mr. Sarder A. Razzak (Executive Director, AMDA Bangladesh) sent in their comments to look back on their accomplishments.

1. Professor Dr. Sarder A Nayeem (President, AMDA Bangladesh)

It was truly a remarkable input of AMDA towards refugee healthcare while most of the refugees had not been able to access to the healthcare service since they arrived in August 2017. Most Rohingya refugees have reached Bangladesh - men, women and children with barely any belongings - have sought shelter in these areas, setting up camp wherever possible in the difficult terrain and with little access to aid, safe drinking water, food, shelter or healthcare. One year has passed; we have very successfully accomplished our medical relief operation as it was planned. Now no more emergency situation in the refugee camp, the process of rehabilitation and resettlement is going on. AMDA is always in the front line and committed to ‘As Long as There’s a Life to be Saved’ during any emergency situation. So, we have decided to complete our medical operation from the refugee camp by the end of November 2018. We are grateful to the AMDA International, Japan for its big contribution and wonderful support directly to the health care service for the Rohingya refugees. In the meanwhile United Commercial Bank Limited (UCB) also extended its support to promote better health care services with us jointly.

In the future, we are always ready to extend our hands to support victims during any man-made or natural disaster in Bangladesh and beyond. Many thanks.

2. Mr. Sarder A Razzak (Executive Director, AMDA Bangladesh)

It was an amazing experience for AMDA Bangladesh to implement an emergency medical relief operation for the Rohingya Refugees in Cox’s Bazar for one year since October 2018.

Kutupalong Camp in Ukhya Upazila (Sub district) in Cox’s Bazar is the largest settlement area for the refugees. It was being overcrowded. Some of the refugees were being shifted to the extension part of the Kutupalong camp. So, personal hygiene, water and sanitation were the prime requirements, besides the emergency medical services.

A total of 817,000 Rohingya refugees are now living in the southern most district of Bangladesh. Since 25 August, some 604,000 people have crossed the border, having fled violence in Myanmar. This is in addition to the over 200,000 people who had sought safety in Cox’s Bazar following previous outbreaks of violence.

Along with the holistic support from AMDA Japan, AMDA Bangladesh, Japan Bangladesh Friendship Hospital and United Commercial Bank Limited (UCB) had taken the initiative to run a joint medical camp to promote better health care services for the Rohingya refugees when there was a huge need of medical care.

AMMM (AMDA Multinational Medical Mission) had extended its cooperation to send medical personnel to observe our activities on the ground. Medical professionals from Japan, Nepal including Dr. Shigeru Suganami, President of AMDA International had joined the mission.

We, AMDA Bangladesh have a great desire to participate in AMMM (AMDA Multinational Medical Mission) and make it a successful mission around the globe.
