AMDA Emergency Relief Bulletin #2: Typhoon Vinta in the Philippines

Publication date:2018-01-31

Following Tropical Storm Kai-tak (Urduja), the heavy rain caused by Typhoon Tembin (Vinta) that hit the Philippines just before Christmas caused a heavy flood in Cagayan de Oro River (Southern Mindanao), badly flooding the city of Cagayan de Oro downstream. AMDA and its partners analyzed the situation and decided to distribute food rations in areas of the city which are most affected.

On the 27th, AMDA team who were sent to provide relief to Cagayan de Oro joined the Philippine Army in distributing food and relief supplies to eight out of 10 areas of the city where proper aid were not yet provided. Evacuation centers where goods were distributed are well maintained by the locals. In some low lying areas, water levels have not dipped.

The team that have completed providing relief for both disasters have returned home. However, affected areas are still being monitored.

According to the Philippine Department of Social Welfare and Development (DWSD), approximately 770,000 people living in 1,131 districts are affected, and more than 110,000 people are forced to evacuate their homes (as of 30 December 2017).
