The torrential rain since the early August has caused floods and landslides in the southern part of Nepal (Terai plains) which has left substantial damage to the area. The Interior Ministry of Nepal announced that, as of 20 August, 143 people died, 30 people have been missing and 43 people were injured. While 44,683 households have been displaced, 79,812 houses were completely destroyed and over 144,000 buildings were damaged. At the request of the government of Nepal, AMDA Nepal launched relief efforts in cooperation with afflicted municipalities and local health offices from 19 August.

The vicinities of two hospitals run by AMDA Nepal in Jhapa, and Sunsari adjacent to the district, have also been affected by the floods. Accordingly, AMDA Nepal conducted medical assistance by dispatching a relief team comprising 10 to 15 medical personnel from 19-23 August. The team organized mobile clinic in five locations and saw around 300 patients per day.

Also, a medical team from AMDA Siddhartha Children and Women Hospital (Butwal, Rupandehi) worked for five days (18-22 August) in Nawalparasi located six hours southwest of Kathmandu. The average number of patients was around 350 daily. Many of the symptoms were skin irritation and digestive ailments (e.g. gastritis) as well as common cold. The local people thanked the team for the distance it had traveled: In fact, AMDA Nepal was the first medical team to reach the area.

As of now, no outbreak of infection has been reported. AMDA Nepal will keep an eye on the situation.
