AMDA Emergency Bulletin #2: Peru Flood Disaster

In response to the floods and mudslides that have struck Peru since last month, AMDA will be sending two relief personnel (one doctor, one coordinator) to Lima, the capital, from its Headquarters in Japan. The two will be arriving in Peru on 02 April.

Torrential downpours since last month have caused extensive damage around the country which have affected 797,789 people as a whole. As of 27 March, the deathtoll reached 91 and 122,788 people have been displaced (source: Centro de Operaciones de Emergencia Nacional [COEN].)

Initially, AMDA was asked to work in a severely-affected region, however, the entry to the area has now been restricted foreseeing the occurrence of secondary disasters due to intermittent rain. In the meanwhile, AMDA Peru reported that water has receded in the area around Lima which made it possible to carry out relief activities.

Upon their arrival on 02 April, AMDA personnel from Japan will discuss further activities with AMDA Peru based on local conditions and needs.

Stay tuned for more updates.
