AMDA Relief Mission for Sri Lankan Flood and Landslides

Publication date:2016-06-13

In mid May, a low-pressure zone above Sri Lanka caused heavy rainfall all over the country and forced the water level in most of major rivers in the country to rise, especially, in the western and central province. Several days of incessant rain caused flood in many parts of the country such as Colombo, Katunayake, Ratmalana, Mannar, and Trincomalee, Kurunegala, Kegalle, Nuwaraeliya, Ratnapura, Kalutara, Kandy Puttalam, Batticaloa and Anuradhapura.

As of end of May more than 100 people died and many more are still missing. According to the local officials, heavy flood and landslide affected more than 250,000 people around the country. AMDA Sri Lanka in collaboration with the St. John Ambulance mobilized Disaster Relief Teams to some of the worst affected areas to assist in the relief work. On the 2nd of June, a coordinator from AMDA International flew to Colombo and joined AMDA Sri Lanka in assisting people affected by the disaster. Though the torrential rain has finally receded and people are returning back to their normal life, lots of them have lost almost if not all their belongings including their dwellings. When AMDA staff visited the affected areas some areas are still cordoned off for the public due to further possible landslides.

As part of flood relief AMDA international along with AMDA Sri Lanka, St. Johns Ambulance and Lions-Negambo decided to help one of the schools in the affected area. Yabaraluwa Ananda Junior School is located around 20km away from Colombo in Malwana area of Kegalle district. The schools was partly submerged under water during the flood and at the same time higher part of the building were used as shelter for 80 families from the village. The students attend this school are children of seasonal labour workers. All of their families were affected one way or the other and AMDA team has decided to help the school and the students. The school has 136 students from Grade1 to 5.

AMDA provided each student with school backpack. The Principal, teachers and parents were very appreciative of this much-needed gift for their kids. The students were overjoyed with the colorful bags and could not help themselves from comparing with others and cherishing their new addition.

AMDA International also planning to repair the water well in the school. The well is damaged and need of repair in order to make the drinking water safe and free of contamination for the young students. AMDA also planning to conduct a medical mission and relief item distribution in some other part of affected area in the outskirts of Colombo. AMDA International will be proudly collaborating with our long time partner Rissho-Kosekai for this whole mission. The project is held in collaboration with Rissho-Kosekai's Donate-A-Meal Movement, a movement dedicated to peace building around the globe.
