AMDA Emergency Relief #5: Earthquake in Haiti

Publication date:2021-08-31

On 26 August, AMDA Haiti’s second medical team left Port-au-Prince for the disaster sites which were severely affected by the earlier quake. The team is made up of seven relief personnel including the chapter chairperson, one doctor, one medical student, one nurse and others.

On the 27th, the team conducted medical relief and item donation at Plain Matin, a district in which the preceding team dropped by on the way back from the first mission. As the first team had reported that the town needed much assistance, the second team returned to provide aid. This time, the team examined 84 patients in total, prescribing medicine to those that needed it. For the item distribution, 123 people received foodstuffs and other daily goods, while 36 children were provided with snack crackers. The assistance was well appreciated as “AMDA Haiti was the first NGO to reach the district” according to the residents.

On the 28th, the team visited the Boukan Noel district in Coreil, one of the severely affected communities, to organize medical relief and supply distribution. 62 people came for the medical examination while 120 people received food items and beverages.

Meanwhile in Japan, AMDA coordinator Ms. Kanako Morita paid a visit to the Embassy of Haiti in Tokyo on the 27th. She had a meeting with Haitian ambassador His Excellency Mr. Helph Monod Honorat in seeking advice regarding the relief activities. Likewise, she also visited the Embassy of the Dominican Republic in Japan on the same day. After confirming that her PCR test result was negative, Ms. Morita left Japan on the 28th and is expected to arrive in Haiti on the 31st.
