COVID-19 response headquarters at Okinawa Prefectural Government
On 1 June 2021, AMDA dispatched a nurse to Okinawa in southern Japan in response to an inquiry made by the Okinawa Prefectural Government in tackling surging COVID-19 cases. As of now, the prefecture has been devastated by cluster infections, coupled with a serious shortage of medical manpower.
The nurse was sent after the municipality asked AMDA on 25 May to find medical staff that can work at elderly care facilities that needed much assistance. From the next day, AMDA started calling for medical volunteers for the mission through its own network of relief personnel.
The Japanese government added Okinawa Prefecture to the list of areas under the COVID-19 state of emergency declaration on 23 May.
