COVID-19 Outbreak: AMDA Philippines’ Activities 7 - The 3rd Bayanihan Webinar

Publication date:2020-06-24

Dr. Fuentebella sharing her COVID-19 experience

On 13 June 2020, a five-week webinar series entitled “Bayanihan Webinar” was held for the third time by AMDA Philippines in collaboration with AMSA Philippines and other partner organizations. The third instalment, “Perspectives of a COVID-19 Survivor” featured a doctor who has recently recovered from the novel coronavirus infection. The webinar was attended by 165 people in total, of which 100 of them directly partaking in the event and remaining 65 watching the live stream.

The guest speaker for the online seminar was Dr. Carmina Fuentebella, an internal medicine resident at University of Santo Tomas Hospital in Manila. Originally a member of AMSA Philippines, she touched on how she chose to become a doctor by profession, followed by her account, as a doctor and patient, on what she experienced after contracting COVID-19.

Her stories were about what she went through in which she explicated how her body conditions and state of mind changed during the treatment process, as well as how much her family, friends, and colleagues helped her overcome the test of time.

During a discussion that took place, Dr. Daisy Ilagan-Tagarda (Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, University of Santo Tomas) took questions from the audience, sharing her first-hand experience in treating COVID-19 cases.

The session received more questions than any other instalments, covering a wide range of topics such as matters related to the convalescent plasma therapy, personal impressions of doctors during the patient treatment, as well as how it felt being treated as a doctor who had contracted the disease.
