Responding to the Disaster of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines 10

Publication date:2013-12-24

On December 8th, one month after the Typhoon Haiyan had hit the Philippines, AMDA team moved to Bohol Island, and started the Christmas distribution.

Responding to the request of the mayor of Maribojoc, the distribution started immediately. The Christmas present consisted of one pack of juice, a chocolate bar, candies and chips. They were distributed among 700 students of several elementary schools and pre-schools. AMDA also donated a volley ball, and a sepak takraw ball to each school. In Santa Cruz elementary school, over 400 students lined up in order, and extended their appreciation by singing the "Salamat (Thank you)" song. One of the teachers said, "It has been very difficult to celebrate the Christmas at home for our students this year. The best we can do at school is to cook simple meals for Christmas. All the students were delighted to receive the stationery gift from AMDA in November. We really appreciate AMDA's support."

AMDA team continued to visit more schools on the 10th. In Bohol Island, the direct damage from Typhoon Haiyan seemed to have been minimum, however, due to the big earthquake that had hit the island in October, many houses, buildings, and bridges had been destroyed and the traffic system has damaged severely. The destroyed bridge to Maribojoc has been repaired and now passable. The students are still studying under temporary outside classrooms.
