Post-disaster Recovery Assistance in Sri Lanka: #1

Publication date:2026-01-20

In response to severe flooding which devastated Sri Lanka in late 2025, AMDA has launched efforts to support the post-disaster recovery of affected communities. Spearheaded by AMDA Sri Lanka, specialists from Japan and India are also joining forces with the chapter.

In Sri Lanka, torrential rains brought by a cyclone that made landfall in late November last year caused flooding and landslides across the country, resulting in extensive damage.

According to the Sri Lanka Disaster Management Centre (DMC), approximately 1.7 million people have been affected by the disaster. The number of fatalities has reached 643, with 183 people still reported missing (as of 17 December).

AMDA Sri Lanka launched emergency relief activities immediately after the onset of the crisis, focusing on medical assistance and the distribution of essential relief items.

While the emergency phase has largely stabilized, assessments showed that many communities have yet to achieve sufficient recovery of livelihoods and community functions as humanitarian assistance is gradually scaled down.

In light of this situation, AMDA has decided to implement support activities that focus on the transitional phase from emergency response to recovery.

As part of this initiative, AMDA dispatched one medical doctor and one coordinator from Japan, along with one medical doctor from India on 17 January 2026.

In close cooperation with local authorities and partner organizations, the team will assess the health conditions of affected populations and identify ongoing challenges in daily life. The team also hopes to strengthen the self-reliance of Sri Lanka’s disaster-hit communities by making the most of existing local resources, which will enable post-disaster reconstruction to be conducted in a sustainable manner.
