AMDA Emergency Relief #4: Floods in Sumatra, Indonesia

Publication date:2025-12-26

On 23 and 24 December, AMDA Indonesia conducted relief activities for flood-affected residents and healthcare workers at several evacuation shelters and a community health center in Aceh Tamiang, Indonesia.

At the evacuation shelters, daily necessities such as drinking water, solar lamps, religious items, and toys for children were distributed. These items contributed to improving living conditions in an environment where access to clean water and adequate lighting was limited.

In addition, trauma care using Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) was provided to enhance participants’ ability to cope with psychological stress following the disaster. The program targeted both affected residents and those working for the community health center that took part in disaster response activities. Through the program, participants deepened the understanding of loss experiences and stress caused by the flooding, as well as effective coping methods.

Other than noted, medicines and medical equipment were also provided to the health center.

Meanwhile at AMDA Headquarters in Japan, Japanese nurses who took part in the relief work reported activities during a press conference on 25 December.

During the question-and-answer session, they shared insights gained through field activities, including the circumstances surrounding evacuation during the flooding and how community members supported one another under difficult conditions.

While signs of recovery have been observed in Sumatra, AMDA will keep monitoring the situation by closely staying in touch with AMDA Indonesia, and provide assistance if need be.
