AMDA Emergency Relief #1: Floods in Sumatra, Indonesia

Publication date:2025-12-09

On 4 December, AMDA Indonesia launched emergency relief in response to flooding caused by torrential downpours that pummeled Indonesia’s Sumatra region since late November.

The rains have caused severe flooding and mudslides mainly in Aceh and North Sumatra Provinces. According to Indonesia’s disaster management authority, the extreme rainfall has left 916 people dead, 274 people missing, and 4,200 people injured, affecting 105,900 buildings in total (as of 7 December). In some areas, hospitals have been inundated, forcing the facilities to become partially dysfunctional.

After being dispatched to Medan in North Sumatra on 4 December, two doctors and two medical interns from AMDA Indonesia have been providing medical assistance at local evacuation centers.

Some of the evacuees are alleged to have been suffering from infections due to the external wounds that were left untreated for more than a week.  Many of the residents could not carry their belongings with them when they evacuated.

On 7 December, two nurses from Japan have left for Indonesia to participate in the emergency relief.  They are expected to join AMDA Indonesia’s advance team in Medan the following day.
