Helping returnees in Afghanistan

Publication date:2025-11-20

Through AMDA Afghanistan, AMDA has recently provided assistance to Afghan returnees who were repatriated from Pakistan and Iran, where they had been seeking refuge.

Ever since the Taliban overturned the government in August 2021, AMDA has been keeping an eye on Afghanistan’s humanitarian situation.

The political turmoil has led to an influx of Afghan refugees into neighboring countries such as Pakistan and Iran. However, many have been deported by their authorities in recent years, despite the present uncertainties back home.

According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA), approximately 949,000 Afghans were expelled by the two countries, with around 208,000 people sent back from Pakistan, and approximately 741,000 from Iran. These figures are for early 2025 alone.

What awaited them after living in exile were financial difficulties, making each day a struggle to survive.

In light of such circumstances, AMDA Afghanistan provided medical relief for the returnees at Japan Afghanistan Friendship Hospital, its own medical facility.

Mainly targeting children, women, and elderly people, the hospital provided essential medical services, including prescription drugs, at no cost. Those who required special medical attention were under the care of specialized doctors and medical staff.

As a result, a total of 542 patients benefited from this initiative.

“My children and I wouldn’t have had any access to medical services if it weren’t for this assistance,” one patient said, hoping for the continuation of the aid.

By working hand in hand with Japan Afghanistan Friendship Hospital, AMDA hopes to provide what it can to support those in need.
