AMDA Emergency Relief #2: Typhoon Fung-wong, Philippines

Publication date:2025-11-18

As of 17 November, a joint relief team comprising AMDA, the Philippine Nurses Association (PNA) Catanduanes Chapter, and other aid organizations have been preparing for item distribution efforts in Catanduanes, an island in the Philippines’ Bicol region that was devastated by the super typhoon “Fung-wong.”

AMDA had earlier sent two aid workers from Japan to the Philippines to coordinate relief work with local partners. After arriving in Manila on 15 November, the team met with Dr. Gloria Jumamil-Mercado, Chairperson and Chief Executive Officer of the Asian Center of Excellence in Development and Security (ACEDS), to discuss further plans. It was Dr. Mercado who introduced AMDA to the representative of PNA’s Catanduanes chapter for this emergency response. The next day, the team relocated to Catanduanes for full-fledged relief activities.

After spending a day preparing relief supplies, the joint team is expected to launch item distribution efforts in the municipalities of Caramoran and Pandan, both located in northern Catanduanes, on 18 November.

According to the Philippines’ disaster response authority NDRRMC, 26 people were killed, 47 people were injured, and two people have been missing due to this calamity. The affected population has topped 6.89 million (over 1.95 million households) as of 17 November.

AMDA’s local partners for this mission are as follows:
