AMDA Emergency Relief #04: Floods in the Philippines

Publication date:2025-10-01

To respond to the lingering effects of the flood disaster in July, AMDA Philippines conducted additional relief activities in the Philippines’ Luzon region on 7 September.

At Basuit in the city of San Ildefonso, Bulacan Province, AMDA Philippines carried out comprehensive medical relief, along with the distribution of light meals and drinking water. Approximately 590 people gathered to receive aid.

In addition to medical consultations, drug distribution, and dental treatment, the team organized hygiene education to prevent infectious diseases such as dengue fever. Mental-health guidance was also provided to those experiencing emotional distress.

The most common symptoms observed among patients were the common cold, infections resulting from flooding, diarrhea, and upset stomach. Likewise, many complained of stress, anxiety, and sleeplessness.

According to a local resident, the extensive area was inundated, forcing road blockades in some parts. Evacuation shelters were crowded, food supplies were lacking, and access to medical care was limited.

A mother who accompanied her child to a medical consultation said: “We didn’t know where to go. The water rose so fast. I cannot thank you enough because this is the first time someone asked us how we were really feeling.”

Another elderly man expressed his gratitude by highlighting that the assistance was provided at the right time when people needed it most.

Dr. Erica Tania Davillo who heads AMDA Philippine said: “Through this mission, we managed to convey a message to the victims that ‘they were not forgotten.’ What puts them at ease the most is that we, aid givers, show sympathy to them by visiting them in person. I realized once again that this is more important than anything else.”

Although the mission has been completed, AMDA will keep monitoring the situation on the ground.

AMDA Philippines worked with the following organizations for this mission:

-Philippine Medical Association (PMA) Adhoc Committee on Dengue Advocacy
-E.N.D. Dengue Coalition
-Philippine College of Occupational Medicine (PCOM) Laguna Chapter
-Pocari Sweat Otsuka Philippines
