AMDA received an activity report from People’s Health Foundation (PHF) in Myanmar, AMDA’s local counterpart which jointly organized relief efforts in response to the catastrophic quake that devastated the nation’s central region on 28 March 2025. The report is the final summary of the emergency relief.
After an initial earthquake measuring magnitude 7.7 occurred, a mag. 6.7 quake struck Myanmar again on the following day. Since then, frequent aftershocks have continued, forcing many evacuees to take refuge outdoors in fear of building collapse.
By late June, more than 200 tremors were recorded, causing extensive damage in five areas, namely, Naypyidaw, Mandalay, Shan, Bago, and Sagaing. On 22 April, Myanmar’s disaster response authorities reported 3,757 people were killed, 5,107 people were injured, and 116 people have been missing due to the successive quakes.
Although the road access has been improving in recent months, the routes to affected areas have been limited, causing congestions in major motorways.
Telecommunication and power lines have been stable in most parts. However, in Sagaing, ongoing power disruptions continue to affect the water supply system which relies on electricity to draw water from the river, thereby resulting in water shortages for domestic use.
What is even more challenging for the evacuees is the combined effects of the extreme summer heat whose temperature tops 44 degrees Celsius and the monsoon that began in early June. Downpours from the monsoon have triggered flash floods in some locations.
Meanwhile, water contamination has made it difficult to secure safe drinking water in some areas. With the deterioration of sanitary conditions combined, it is feared that the lives of evacuees may become increasingly difficult.
Working closely with PHF, AMDA dispatched its relief team to Yangon, the largest city of Myanmar, between 5 and 9 April. They coordinated relief efforts while procuring relief items such as medicine, based on the information they gathered onsite. The following efforts are the outcomes of the aid work.

1) Distribution of medical items to severely affected locations in Mandalay:
On 9 April, essential drugs including antibiotics, antihypertensives, cold medicine, and diabetic medicine were delivered to the director of Mandalay’s health authorities. (After AMDA purchased the medicines, PHF distributed the items to the said authorities.)
2) *Providing financial aid to 12 institutions (health authorities, universities, and medical facilities) in Naypyidaw, Mandalay, Shan, Bago, and Sagaing:
Pyinmana General Hospital in Naypyidaw reported that AMDA’s financial assistance helped procure emergency medicines and restore hygiene in the affected wards of the hospital, while allowing local residents to access safe drinking water.
Moreover, the Wachet Monk Hospital in Sagaing said the financial aid was used to distribute food and medical goods to affected communities, in addition to helping elderly people in the region.
*For 2), AMDA’s relief team did not enter the affected sites. The monetary donations were transferred through PHF which acted on AMDA’s behalf.
