On 19 July 2025, AMDA Indonesia organized a seminar on megathrust earthquakes at Hasanuddin University in Makassar, the provincial capital of South Sulawesi in Indonesia. The event, which was co-held by AMDA International, was attended by over 100 participants including medical students.
The seminar commenced with a lecture by Dr. Shigeru Suganami, Honorary President of AMDA International, focusing on the prediction and preparedness for tsunami disasters. By comparing the differences between earthquakes and tidal waves, Dr. Suganami emphasized the significance of mutual assistance (sogo-fujo) during disaster response efforts. He stressed that such collaboration would ultimately instill hope among both the affected and the aid givers.
Presentations were also delivered by Vice Rector of Hasanuddin University and the officials from Indonesian humanitarian organizations on quake mechanisms and responses, followed by Q&A sessions.
The event culminated in the signing of a partnership agreement between AMDA Indonesia and the Indonesian Emergency Health Volunteers Communication, a local aid organization that deploys medical volunteers during emergencies.
This new partnership represents a big step forward for both parties in forging a network for disaster prevention.
