AMDA Emergency Relief #46: Crisis in Ukraine

Publication date:2025-07-16

Activity Report (February – May 2025): MedSpot (Hungary)

MedSpot, a Hungarian medical aid organization, has been one of AMDA’s early partners in the ongoing Ukraine humanitarian response for the past three years.

MedSpot has been organizing mobile clinic activities in western Ukraine’s Zakarpattia Oblast since November 2022. During the monthly mobile clinic, MedSpot’s medical team visits four evacuation centers in two days, seeing approximately 100 to 120 patients per round. Based on the doctors’ assessment, prescription drugs and counselling sessions are also provided for those who require them. AMDA has been aiding the organization by mainly donating medicine and other medical items.

In June, an online meeting was held between AMDA and MedSpot chairman Dr. András Spányik for a periodic reporting session. Because Dr. Spányik joined the meeting from an evacuation center, AMDA was able to learn the state of the shelter and evacuees in real time.

One male evacuee, who fled from a bordering area with Russia with his wife and daughter, talked about his evacuation life. The family has been residing in a room measuring three-square meters for more than two years. Although the shower and toilets are shared with other residents, Dr. Spányik says the shelter is far better than others considering its living environment and cleanliness.

“My daughter has been attending high school online, and my wife has been working at a children’s nursery school for the last year and a half,” the man said. He explained that although it is a big leap for the family to be able to earn money, he himself cannot work due to his chronic illness.

For over two years, the man has been receiving free medical services from MedSpot, which include general consultations, blood pressure checks, cardiography, drug prescriptions and health advice. “While I am deeply grateful for the assistance, I never want people in Japan to experience any of the hardships we are going through,” he said.

A woman who heads a local Ukrainian aid group that works with MedSpot gave the following account:

“The evacuees have been increasingly anxious about what comes next, especially after losing their houses to bombardments, without having any prospects for what the future holds for them. It is obvious that the number of aid organizations has been decreasing, and it leads us to think that we might be forgotten by the rest of the world as time passes. Some evacuees say they just sit on their beds, not knowing what to do after getting up and making their beds in the morning.”

According to Dr. Spányik, securing financial resources has become increasingly difficult as more attention has been focused on the situation in the Middle East. “Because a number of Ukrainian doctors have been sent to the frontline to care for the injured or are taking refuge overseas, we are practically serving as home doctors for the evacuees,” he said.

AMDA will continue providing what it can to support MedSpot’s further activities.
