Building a new well in India’s Bihar state

Publication date:2025-06-03

By Dr. Archana Shrestha Joshi (AMDA Japan)

AMDA has recently helped build a new well in a remote village in the state of Bihar, India.

At Shreepur, a village located on the outskirts of Bodhgaya, the poverty rate is very high since most of the residents belong to the lowest stratum of the Indian caste system (Dalit).

An old well, which previously supplied water to the village, had been operated with an electric pump. However, because power outages frequently occur in the village, a total of 650 residents had been forced to endure the inconvenience of not being able to use it from time to time. To improve this situation, AMDA built a new well equipped with a manual pump near a local Hindu temple.

At the start of the construction, which began on 7 February 2025, a ritual to purify the land took place following regional traditions. Because the level of the groundwater had been diminishing, the new well needed to be as deep as possible. Thanks to the suitable soil conditions, and fewer rocks obstructing the process, the excavation went as deep as 110 feet (33.528 meters).

The excavation and pump placement were done in a relatively short period of time. However, it took some time to build a shack to guard the pump from theft. Thanks to the villagers who were always on the lookout for intruders, the pump remained intact throughout its month-long construction.

Although the construction work had to be suspended due to the government restriction on building-material procurement, the new well was completed without major setbacks.

According to Ms. Veda who runs an elderly care home at the village, residents are happy to be able to access water, even at the time of power outages. “Not just for drinking, but the new well has also enabled us to use water for other purposes,” she said.

During the scorching summer, pupils drop by the well to quench their thirst as it is located on the way to their school.

The villagers usually carry water in a water jar or a bucket by placing it on top of their heads. Everyone praises the new well for making their lives much more convenient, emphasizing that they will take good care of it to ensure its long use.

The Hindu temple by the well is where people gather. The water is used to purify the temple as well. By sharing water from the same well, it is not difficult to imagine that the local community will be revitalized through the bond nurtured amongst the residents.

AMDA feels deeply grateful to Mrs. Yoshie Higuchi, the widow of the late Chairman Higuchi of Shintsu Inc., for her generous offer to "bring water to underprivileged people in India." Her kind proposal was made through Mr. Aoyama of Shintsu SP.

Once again, AMDA would like to thank Mrs. Higuchi and Mr. Aoyama for allowing AMDA to construct a third well in one of its activity sites.
