In August 2024 and March 2025, AMDA Cambodia organized an annual youth forum primarily targeting medical and nursing students. Addressing issues mostly associated with reproductive health, the event has become a routine occurrence for the Cambodian chapter.
Although the prevention of HIV/AIDS and STDs had been the core topic of the forum over the years, it has recently begun to explore themes more relevant to current times, such as sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) of women, as well as cervical cancer.
Marking its sixth and seventh events, this year’s forums delved into how medical professionals should cope with rapidly advancing scientific technologies including AI and VR. By showcasing examples of how they have been incorporated into the current medical practices, students were encouraged to stay prepared for the fast-paced technological advancement by anticipating what developments may occur in the next five years.
Each forum was attended by around 120 people, with experts from the Cambodian ministry of health, Chenla University, and RCRC Vocational Center delivering lectures on the given theme.
As a sideline topic, the forums also discussed the need for students to acquire social skills required at work or in any social settings after graduation. This included guidance on how to deal with emotional conflicts, which many of the novice working adults might experience after they start working.
Dr. Sieng Rithy, who heads AMDA Cambodia, said, the forums were intended to help students navigate their ways into the ever-changing world - both economically and societally - by giving them the opportunity to learn what the future holds for the medical and health sectors in 2030.
As for the annual college-soccer tournament (which AMDA Cambodia holds to deter young people from getting involved in drugs and criminal activities), it was postponed as the event coincided with Cambodia’s medical licensing exam. The soccer program is expected to resume around May 2025.
Finally yet most importantly, AMDA Cambodia’s activities have been made possible thanks to Yamaichi Kanko, a tourist agency in Japan that has supported the chapter for many years.
