AMDA Emergency Relief #42: Crisis in Ukraine

Activity Report (October 2024 – January 2025): City of Goodness (Ukraine)
Since August 2024, AMDA has been providing support to the City of Goodness, a Ukrainian medical charity active in western Ukraine bordering Romania.
The City of Goodness has been helping women and children who have evacuated from the eastern part of the country, which is close to war zones. In addition to providing them with a means of transportation, the organization has been accepting the evacuees at its own facility.
At the evacuation shelter which the City of Goodness runs, around 300 people have been currently taking refuge. Aside from those who have evacuated from war zones, the facility also accommodates people who have fled domestic abuse or those who require housing for financial reasons.
AMDA has been primarily distributing food supplies to the shelter, in addition to financial assistance it provides to the Butterfly House, a children’s hospice operated by the City of Goodness. AMDA's funds have been used to cover part of the hospice’s medical supply costs.
[Comments from an evacuee and staffers at the City of Goodness:]
“Myself, my children, and my grandmother ran for our lives from Kharkiv which was under constant bombardment. Since we arrived here, we’ve been able to receive medical services as needed. The staff at the City of Goodness take good care of my children and my grandmother as well. The food here is great, and I’ve been blessed to be able to live my life comfortably, thanks to the kindness, warmth, and love of those who work or stay here. I feel grateful that I can raise my children in a relatively safe environment. Thank you, AMDA.” (Olena, an evacuee from Kharkiv)
“I am originally from Mariupol where fierce battles took place. I have been working here as a speech-language pathologist since I moved here in 2022 due to the crisis. I believe everyone is led to the right place at the right time in one’s life. Although I had never heard of the City of Goodness before, I guess I am here because my life led me to. I am really satisfied with the fact that I have been able to support children through my work. It’s the people’s warmth here that makes us feel comfortable.” (Yuliia, a speech therapist at the City of Goodness)
“My work at the City of Goodness is much more than just a job. When I looked into the eyes of the children coping with complex medical conditions at the Butterfly House, I knew I would devote myself to caring for them. I spare no effort in giving them love and kindness to make them feel better. Although their time might be limited, I always hope they make most of it.” (Nurse, City of Goodness)
