AMDA Emergency Relief #41: Crisis in Ukraine

Publication date:2025-02-05

Activity Report (October 2024 – January 2025): St. Michael’s Center for Medical and Social Rehabilitation of Children (Ukraine)

As part of the ongoing assistance in response to the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, AMDA has been supporting St. Michael’s Center for Medical and Social Rehabilitation of Children, located in Uzhhorod, Zakarpattia Oblast, in the country’s western region.

Founded in 2018, the hospital currently has 225 children registered for treatment. Up to 20 children have been receiving rehabilitative care on a daily basis. Some of them have fled from southern Ukraine since the onset of the crisis.

Although air raid sirens go off sporadically, there hasn’t been any direct damage to the area until now, which is why the region is considered relatively safe.

Because some children are sensitive to noise, the facility is making every effort to alleviate their mental burden and prevent panic attacks through continuous care.

Furthermore, the hospital can accommodate up to three families on the third floor of the building.

Primarily intended for the families of the patients from war zones, the accommodations each have a kitchen, a shower, and a bedroom. Being located within the same building has been a big plus as it makes it easier for the families to take care of their children.

A mother, whose child has been receiving speech therapy, said she was glad to find the hospital that offered a wide range of rehabilitation programs.

A woman, who has been accompanying her grandchild to music therapy since September 2024, expressed her initial skepticism about the effectiveness of the treatment. However, her perspective shifted when she observed her grandchild singing at home. “The visible improvement made me realize that it was really working,” she remarked.

During this period, AMDA also supported the hospital by covering some of the expenses, including surging utility costs and fuels for vehicles and power generators.

As part of the medical assistance, AMDA distributed diapers to bedridden elderly patients, as well as medication to three patients who were each suffering from a cardiac disease, liver failure, and cancer. The support was aimed at assisting patients who were unable to afford medical supplies or expensive medicine due to ongoing price hikes.

At the same time, vitamin supplements and cold medicine were provided to the hospital staff to help them maintain their health in the midst of their busy work.

Other than noted, AMDA has also provided aid to local communities that have supported evacuees. The details are as follows:

1) Providing meals to pupils at a local nursery school struggling with a budget shortage (38 students)

2) Distributing foodstuffs to 100 families that fled from the eastern region, and to 50 people facing financial difficulties, including pensioners and the sick

3) Supplying vegetables and seasonings to a local organization working to provide free meals to the economically challenged

4) Offering fruits, cookies, and drinks at a Christmas event hosted by a local church

5) Donating cleaning equipment to community centers accommodating evacuees

6) Presenting gifts to 50 children on Saint Nicholas Day, while preparing stationary for a handicraft event, in addition to donating 17 pairs of T-shirts to a local chorus group

The protracted crisis makes it unclear as to what the future holds for people in Ukraine. However, hoping for every evacuee to be able to live in peace, AMDA will continue reaching out to those in difficult circumstances.
