On 13 December 2024, AMDA Haiti organized medical relief activities at one of the biggest evacuation camps for internally displaced people in Port-au-Prince, Haiti’s capital.
Haiti has been politically destabilized since the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in July 2021. Coupled with the extent of past natural disasters such as the catastrophic 2010 earthquake and numerous hurricanes, the country’s security situation has been deteriorating, in which armed criminal gangs have been gaining control over the nation’s capital and major cities. Fleeing the violence, more than 700,000 people have sought refuge in evacuation camps set up by the authorities in various locations.
Especially in Port-au-Prince, indiscriminate attacks on citizens, robbery, kidnapping, and murder committed by criminal gangs have led to a breakdown in the rule of law. Furthermore, children have been deprived of their right to education as gangs have been taking hold of schools.
Because foreign aid organizations have been withdrawing from Haiti due to the nation’s worsening security situation, continued international assistance has been urgently needed.
