Farming Project in Bodhgaya, India (October – November 2024)

Publication date:2025-01-22

Since 2022, AMDA has been running a farm in a close proximity to AMDA Peace Clinic in Bodhgaya, India, which has been a primary health-care provider for pregnant women, mothers, and children in the area. Part of the fresh crops produced on the farm have been used for nutrition workshops held in line with the clinic’s maternal and child health initiatives.

When AMDA’s Japanese staff members visited the farm last autumn, one of the families who regularly came the clinic happened to drop by, and showed them how to thresh the harvested rice. This experience made them realize how much this project was supported by the local people.

When the rainy season is about to end in late October, it is time to harvest crops such as gourd, bitter melon, okra, and loofah. The harvested vegetables are then shared with the local people who have come to offer help as part of their remunerations.

November is when rice is harvested, while garlic and onion seedlings are planted. The rice harvest takes three days with three adults involved in the work. The harvested rice are bundled, threshed, and processed into brown rice. In total, more than a tonne of rice was produced on the farm this year. And again, local residents are paid to undertake the work, and are given a certain amount of rice at the end.

After the end of every farming season comes the tilling of the farmland. The local staff members cultivate the land using a tractor in preparation for the next season.

The garlic planted in October grows well into December when onions, coriander, and spinach are sown.
