AMDA Emergency Relief #3: Typhoon Trami (Kristine) et al., Philippines
Publication date:2024-11-25
On the morning of 22 November, one coordinator and one nurse from AMDA Japan left for the Philippines to join emergency relief in Catanduanes, a province which was severely damaged by one of the six storms that recently battered the nation.
The dispatch was made after AMDA was called for assistance by its local partner, Asian Center for Excellence in Development and Security, to respond to the high level of devastation in the region.
Upon arriving in the Philippines on the following day, the two aid workers had a meeting with the officials from the local branch of the Philippine Nurses Association for the joint relief work.
As a result, they decided to organize item distribution efforts in three local towns including Panganiban for the local residents and the members of the nurses’ association, whose houses were destroyed by the storm.
On 24 November, the joint team paid a visit to the town mayor of Panganiban for the disaster assessment. The team also visited the town's Barangay Caboyoan area to determine the extent of the damage.
According to local residents, they spent a sleepless night on the day the storm hit (16 November). They are still fearing for the recurrence of the typhoon, so much so that they haven't been able to stand up against the calamity. "We have lost our house, our jobs, and everything else," one of the residents said. "I hope someone who hears this message will help us because we are not even sure if we have food to eat tomorrow."
As of now, preparations are underway for the upcoming supply distribution.
