AMDA Emergency Relief #2: Typhoon Trami (Kristine), Philippines

Publication date:2024-11-05

From 2 to 3 November, AMDA Philippines carried out item distribution and medical relief activities for disaster-stricken communities in Bicol, a region devastated by typhoon Trami (Kristine).

On 2 November, aid workers from AMDA Philippines conducted relief work in two locations in Camarines Sur Province, namely, at the town of Camaligan in the morning, and at the Magarao Convention Center in the afternoon.

The next day, the team visited La Opinion, Nabua, in the same province. In addition to donating relief supplies and providing medical assistance, the team organized a program to support children's mental health.

The relief activities were jointly conducted by AMDA Philippines’ two teams that had left Manila separately. They got together in Bicol upon the arrival of the second team which left Manila on 1 November. The advance team led by AMDA Philippines chairperson had already been at the disaster site a day earlier to coordinate the relief effort.

According to the initial disaster assessment, it was reported that debris from flooding had been mounting up on the pavement after they were removed to the sides of the roads. Power outages continued in some areas although flood water had receded. Because it was difficult to procure drinking water locally, aid workers were recommended to bring bottles of water beforehand.

To help supply daily necessities of the local residents, AMDA Philippines prepared manually-rechargeable torches, baby bottles (milk bottles), as well as children’s picture books and colouring books (which were later used for the aforementioned mental-health program for children).

For this project, University of Nueva Caceres, Camarines Sur Polytechnic Colleges, the doctors’ association in Camarines Sur, as well as local municipalities, private organizations, and volunteers have provided huge support in carrying out the work on the ground.

Currently, plans are underway to carry out item distribution efforts in Sorsogon by the end of the month.

According to the announcement by the Philippines’ disaster response authorities *NDRRMC, 146 people were killed, 91 people have been injured, and 19 people have been missing as of 2 November. A total of around 2.17 million households (8.53 million people) have been affected, of which 720,000 families (3.02 million people) are of Bicol.

*Administered by the Office of Civil Defense under the Department of National Defense, NDRRMC (the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council) is a working group of various government, non-government, civil sector and private sector organizations of the government of the Philippines.
