On 25 October, AMDA decided to launch emergency relief activities in response to typhoon Trami, locally known as Kristine, which hit the Philippines’ Bicol Region including Camarines Sur and Sorsogon Provinces.
Prior to the storm making landfall, extensive flooding was recorded in Luzon including the Bicol region due to torrential rain. Since 23 October, AMDA Japan had been closely monitoring the situation with AMDA Philippines to determine the extent of the damage.
The Philippines’ disaster response authorities *NDRRMC has said 111 people were killed, 74 people have been injured, and 30 people have been missing. A total of around 1.7 million households (7 million people) have been affected, of which 630,000 families (2.7 million people) are of Bicol (as of 29 October).
On 27 October, an online meeting was held between AMDA Philippines, its local partners, and AMDA Japan for the planned emergency relief.
According to local sources, the flood water has not receded in some of AMDA’s candidate activity locations. Given the fact that some people had to use a boat to evacuate, the concerned parties have been trying to make careful coordination with each other in terms of the activity schedule, activity sites, as well as the means of transportation in the region.
Since 28 October, AMDA Philippines and its partners have started gathering relief supplies. The items include manually-rechargeable torches, baby bottles (milk bottles), as well as children’s picture books and colouring books which will be used for mental-health support for minors.
Meanwhile, AMDA Philippines has been continuing to work out plans for the relief activities, primarily in the Bicol area, with its local partners.
