The team of acupuncturists from AMDA Japan Headquarters completed its mission on 1 October after having worked in flood-stricken Wajima, Ishikawa Prefecture, starting on 28 September.
The mission focused on supporting the carers and staff members of local nursing facilities by offering acupuncture therapy. This is because carers themselves had been affected by the flood disaster while taking care of their nursing home residents.
What impressed the AMDA therapists was how positively the carers were handling their daily work under difficult circumstances. The care workers said with a smile that they could strive because they had their work to do.
On the last day, the team revisited the same nursing home from the previous day to offer acupuncture treatment. "It was good to learn that those carers had limited chances to vent what they had bottled up," one of the therapists said. "In a way, it was a precious learning experience."
Although the team left Wajima on 2 October, AMDA will keep an eye on the local situation by staying in touch with its counterparts.
