On 23 September, AMDA has sent one coordinator and one nurse to flood-stricken Wajima, Ishikawa Prefecture, located on the Noto Peninsula in Japan’s northern coast.
AMDA had kept an eye on the region’s weather conditions ever since a climate warning was issued for heavy rainfalls on 21 September.
As of now, the rain has caused major flooding in the region, with landslides and river overflows washing away houses and buildings. A large-scale blackout is also reported.
The disaster has been a huge blow to the region especially given the fact the entire peninsula was yet to recover from the devastating earthquake that occurred on 1 January this year. AMDA had also responded to the quake by launching a month-long emergency relief mission in Wajima.
The team has left AMDA Japan Headquarters in Okayama for Wajima at 1 p.m. and is expected to determine the further course of relief work upon arrival after assessing the situation on the ground.
