AMDA Emergency Relief #6: Sulawesi Earthquake

Publication date:2018-10-23

On 12 October, a team of medical personnel that left Makassar arrived in Palu to join the relief effort in quake-hit Central Sulawesi. They teamed up with the advance team to revisit the district of Talipa to conduct a needs assessment. After having a discussion with the village leader of Talipa Gingiri, the joint team decided to provide relief goods, namely, three boxes of dried noodles, 10 units of solar-powered lights and 30 blankets. Moreover, the team handed food items and water to evacuees which were donated by a local private company. While no item seemed to be in short supply in Talipa Watuge, the team provided portable lights in Mamboro, a village which the team visited for the first time. From the 13th to 14th, the team went to help set up a toilet and a kitchen at an evacuation camp in the village of Wani in Palu City.

Three AMDA personnel returned to Japan after completing their work on the 17th, but the relief effort has been up and running in Palu based on the close collaboration between AMDA, Hasanuddin University and University of Muslim. From now on, the scope of activity is expected to shift to mental care of the victims.

According to Indonesian National Board for Disaster Management (BNPB), as of 14 October, the death toll is 2,095 with 4,612 people injured and 680 missing.
